A Guide to Alberta's Senior Support Programs
Alberta offers an extensive range of support programs designed to help seniors with their financial, health, and personal needs. While often referred to as a single “senior support program,” this network actually consists of several distinct initiatives. Understanding each program, its eligibility criteria, and what it covers is the first step toward accessing the right support.
The Alberta Seniors Benefit: Monthly Financial Aid
The Alberta Seniors Benefit is a core provincial support system component, providing a monthly cash benefit to low-income seniors aged 65 and older. This benefit is calculated based on factors including income, accommodation, and marital status.
Eligibility: Applicants must be 65 or older, reside in Alberta for at least three months, be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and receive the federal Old Age Security (OAS) pension. Income thresholds are evaluated annually. As of the 2025-2026 benefit year, single seniors with an annual income of $34,770 or less and senior couples with a combined annual income of $56,820 or less may be eligible. Benefits can start the month of your 65th birthday and may be backdated up to 11 months.
Coverage for Seniors Program: Health Benefits
This program provides premium-free coverage for prescription drugs and other health services not fully covered by AHCIP. Eligibility is automatic once age is validated with AHCIP.
- Prescription Drugs: Covers drugs listed in the Alberta Drug Benefit List. Co-payment maximums increased starting in July 2025.
- Ambulance Services: Covers the full cost of ground ambulance services.
- Other Benefits: Includes partial coverage for clinical psychological, home nursing, and chiropractic services with annual maximums.
