Did people in the 50s suffer from diabetes? A historical perspective

In the late 1950s, a U.S. National Health Survey estimated the prevalence of diabetes at around 9 cases per 1,000 people, starkly lower than today's rates, yet yes, people in the 50s did suffer from diabetes. The experience of living with the disease, however, was fundamentally different from what we know now.
